What is another name for an insulation resistance tester?

An insulation resistance tester has another name. We can call it a megohmmeter. Informally, we can also call it a megger. All these terms refers to the same instrument. It can used to assess the condition of insulation in electrical systems by applying a high voltage and measuring the resulting current flow.

Why is insulation resistance testing important?

As usual, insulation resistance can be shorted as IR. And run an IR testing is important as the following reasons:

  • IR test can extend your equipment's life. If your instrument's insulation is well maintained and we regularly test and document it, we can easily identify a trend of declining insulation resistance should the instrument become damaged or otherwise compromised. Without regular testing, it's impossible to predict impending failures and proactively maintain the health of your equipment.

  • Insulation resistance testing can help you save money. When an instrument fails, the cost of replacing it completely is much higher than simply repairing the insulation. Furthermore, if an instrument is damaged or malfunctioning, it can affect the normal operation of your plant and other operations.

  • IR test is easy and quick. Due to the wide variety of devices tested, we don't have a recommended insulation test run time, but typically the test takes 30 seconds or 1 minute. The test process is also much simpler than you might think. After connecting the test leads, simply turn the selector switch to the desired voltage or function and click Test. Depending on the model you're using, you may need to hold the button down for the entire test period or for a few seconds. Before beginning the test, carefully review the manufacturer's instructions for safety precautions.

How does an insulation resistance tester work?

Normally speaking, run an insistance resistance test aims to test IR. And we need the testing equipment to help us. Besides, insulation resistance testing is easier and quicker than you think. The following is the procedure of insulation resistance tester working.

  • Apply the Test voltage: During the test, the tester applies a controlled high DC voltage, such as 1000V to the insulation. The applied voltage is significantly higher than the normal operating voltage of the insulation and is used to perform stress testing on the insulation.

  • Test  Current: A certain amount of current naturally flows through insulation due to various factors. There are three common types of current. First, it's a charging current. This current decays rapidly in its initial stages due to the insulation's capacitance. Second, it's a dielectric polarization current. This current is caused by the alignment of dipoles within the insulation material under the influence of an electric field. Lastly, it's a leakage current. This current actually leakages due to defects or breakdown points in the insulation. The testing equipment can accurately measures these currents, recording the values at each stage.

  • Calculating Resistance: According to the OHM's Law, as the formula goes, R=V/I, we obtain the impedance value of the insulating material through calculation as the basic parameter for judging the insulation performance.

  • Analyse: Interpreting this information reveals that high resistance values generally indicate good insulation, while low resistance values indicate potential problems or degradation. The specific impedance value obtained is then compared with industry standards and historical data to determine whether the insulation is within acceptable limits. The tester may also perform additional calculations, such as the polarization index (PI), to further assess insulation quality and long-term stability.

What are key features of Megger Testing equipment?

Insulation resistance (IR) measures an insulator's ability to withstand a working voltage without any leakage path. It reflects the condition of the insulation. It is measured using a Megger instrument, which applies a DC voltage between two probes and automatically calculates and displays the IR value. Megohmmeter testing has become so popular that the terms insulation resistance and megohmmeter test have become synonymous. We can regard IR testing equals to mehohmmeter testing and megger testing.

Take our product RD3215E as a example. There are severals features that attracts you to choose.

insulation resustance testing

  • It has Custom setting measurement mode, optional PI and DAR calculation formulas, custom setting test voltage and custom setting test duration, which can provide variety of options to user and convient the special site request.

  • When the measuring voltage is applied, it can output DC voltage 0V~1000V and AC voltage 0~700V, which basically meets the equipment test voltage requirements.

  • It applies to the unique strong anti-interference technology and stable testing capabilities in large distributed capacitance site (such as long cables) and strong electromagnetic interference environments (such as substations).

  • This device includes a voltage monitor that automatically monitors the voltage of the device under test. If the voltage exceeds 36V, testing is automatically disabled, effectively protecting the instrument and operator. It also includes a current monitor and a temperature monitor that automatically displays the test circuit current and the temperature and humidity inside the instrument box.

  • It also features a large-capacity test record memory that can automatically store up to 1,000 sets of real-time test data, including test date and time. It also has USB and Bluetooth communication capabilities, allowing recorded data to be uploaded to a computer for statistical analysis, or to a mobile phone.
